Aeromart 2008 – Montreal
April 8, 2008, 5:53 pm
Filed under: What's New in the Aerospace

Hey All, thanks alot for keeping regular visits on this page. This will be my final posting, So I made it an interesting one.

The article I found regarding a new, upcoming event in the Montreal Aerospace Cluster called, Aeromart 2008 seems to be very interesting.

Let me tell you exactly what this event is :

• AEROMART is not an exhibition but a B2B event to be held at Palais des
Congrès in Montreal April 8-9 and 10 for over 400 aerospace buyers and sellers
of prime contractors, Tiers 1 & 2 and subcontractors to gather and have
individual meetings.

• A truly international event: companies from the USA, Canada, Mexico, Europe,
Russia, India, and more… click here to view a list of participants.

• 2 days of face to face meetings with contacts of your choice.

• 2 days of conferences (solutions workshops).

• One day of “Do Business With…” (presentations made by Primes).

• Cocktail/event for all participants, and business lunches to strengthen
networking.

So, this event isn’t your ordinary aerospace event, it is something totally different. In this event, a B2B relationship is established where many businesses from all over the world attend the conference. Some countries include Mexico, Europe, Russia, Canada and the USA. Having several companies in each of the aerospace industries will provide a chance for the GTA cluster to engage in a collaborative relationship to find out more ways of expanding and to better itself as a cluster.

For the ones that are interested in finding out how this works, here are the next steps:

1. Fill an online form and provide a description of your capabilities, technologies,
applications, and products: click here to register.

2. Three weeks prior to the event, you will be able to access the detailed profiles
of all the participants from the online catalogue.

3. Our user friendly program will help you identify the right contacts and request
meetings with those companies selected.

4. The solicited contacts will validate all the requests made for a meeting.

5. The Aeromart team will set up a program of pre-scheduled individual meetings
with the contacts requested and those who also selected your profile. You will
then be able to consult your program online and prepare your agenda of
meetings prior to the event.

Whoever is interested in this should follow these steps as it seems like a very interesting event.

There are several other benefits that you can retain from engaging in this event. for example, you will be exposed to all international contacts that will be present in this even. Therefore, prepare in advance so you will have the chance to collaborate and gain information.

Second, there is a huge time and cost advantage by reducing international travel.

Third, there are several different discounted rates provided to Canadian companies, expeciall in Montreal and Quebec. So these companies are able to take advatage of registering at a lower rate.

GTA Aerospace – Taking Exports to a whole new level
April 7, 2008, 10:40 pm
Filed under: What's New in the Aerospace

Hey All!

I’ve got great news for the ones that are interesting in hearing about where the GTA Aerospace cluster is heading in the near future.

So far, it has been doing extremely well with sales and outsourcing. Now it has switched its focus toward exports and revamping its export lines in a whole new way.

With Ontario’s history of the airline industry,  we know how far it has come and what it has done for the Canadian economy so far. Well, now we something new, helping the canadian economy again, but i na different way.

How does Canad Keep their competitive advatage when it comes to saving costs? outsourcing and generating profits through exports. So far, the Canadian, more specifically, the GTA aerospace has elevated itself, yet again to uplift its competitive advantage. Figures illustrate that Canada’s aircraft component costs are the lowest in all G-7 countries. This is definitely an advatage that cant be ignored.

With that said, back to the GTA’s new focus, Exports and exporting companies. Here are soem key inserts about his topic from the article:

1. With R&D costs almost 24 per cent lower than in the United States, there’s more room for exporting companies to develop new and better technologies that translate into better products and services.

2. Lower business costs give Ontario-based exporters a decided advantage over other jurisdictions. For example, on average, costs are nine per cent lower than in the United States.

As you can see, these are some of the key inserts that stand out from the article. Having low R & D costs, provides us with more room for exporting companies to emerge. It also provides them an opportunity to develop technologies and ultimately uplift their services and products. Also, as mentioned before, lower business costs provide a unique competitive advantage to the export-based companies as well as the GTA economy itself. With these advantages, the Canadian economy continues to grow and succeed day by day.

Will Denver give the cold shoulder to Southwest Airlines?
April 7, 2008, 10:26 am

Hey All,

Thanks for checking back yet again!

I found an interesting article that focuses on a company that has left the Aerospace cluster for quite some time not, 20 years to be exact, and has returned. Taking Denver’s place in the industry into consideration, critics wonder if Denver will in fact accept them back into the cluster. Here is an insert describing the situation:

“When Southwest Airlines introduces service to a new city, the discount giant has typically found a receptive marketplace that allows the carrier to quickly establish a formidable beachhead in its new market. But Southwest’s return to Denver after a nearly 20-year absence might prove to be a bit more of a battle than the airline found as it made impressive debuts during the past five years at new cities like Philadelphia and Pittsburgh. When Southwest added new service to those cities, fares plummeted across all airlines, and the airline quickly gained market share, adding new routes and increasing frequencies on ones it already served.”

This article further discusses how Southwest Airlines left  the cluster and now has returned to the same place. Denver, providing several different research services and Incubators for small businesses, contributed to the growth of Southwest Airlines throughout its existence. But now, will they accept the Airline back? this a question and an argument that has been arising in the minds of many critics. There is nothing more left to say than only  time will decide.

Colorado’s First Aerospace Incubator
April 4, 2008, 9:19 am

Thanks again for dropping by!, Have I got something interesting for everyone today.

Well, this topic is something that was wondering about for quire some time now. Especially regarding why it has not taken place yet. Denver, a very successful aerospace cluster, has finally decided to intergrate an inclubater to its cluster. For the ones that are unfamiliar with the cluster terminology, an incubator is a certain project, or an institution that provides aids, in terms of financials and resources, to an upcoming company within the cluster. For example, if my company was jsut starting off in the aerospace industry in the GTA, a certain company that helps me with finances and resources needed can be considered an incubator, because it provides resources to help other companies grow.

Now, back on topic, the incubator topic in Denver is actually a project called 8th Continent. Adding an incubator is just an extension to the project itself. It already concists of chamber of commerce, Colorado school of mines and a research centre.

This is what the Colorado Governer Bill Ritter had to say about the implementation of an incubater in Colorado:

“For the first time, government, industry and academia have joined forces with entrepreneurs and venture capitalists to forge the next frontier in commercializing space technology and resources, said Colorado Governor Bill Ritter. With our regions unique cluster of businesses, IT infrastructure, research institutions and aerospace workforce, the 8th Continent Project and Colorados first aerospace incubator will position Colorado at the vortex of Space 2.0.

As you can see, this is a collaborative approach taken by joining several forces together. The government, the industry and the academia have joined together to ensure future success of the Denver Aerospace Cluster. They feel that with the mass amount of resources present in the Denver cluster of business, the incubator will ultimately position itself at the top of prime time.

We all know that the amount of services provided by the incubator will vary depending on where and how its structured. This specific incubator will not provide space to other companies who are in need. They will however, assist companies with general requirements such as resources and finances. Of course, these services are geared only towards companies that are enrolled in the space/aerospace industry in the Denver, Colorado cluster.

In its begenning stages, the incubater is estimated to serve approximately 14 to 15 companies per year and provide larger budgets than other incubators. The generated money will be allocated towards supporting and helping its research structures, such as the School of Mines.

This will definitely be one the main highlights of this year, in relation to the Denver Aerospace.

GOL anounces new flight network for GTA
April 2, 2008, 8:59 pm
Filed under: What's New in the Aerospace

Thanks for dropping by again!

I found and interesting article that describes the new flight network that has been designed for the GTA. You are probably wondering where the flight network leads to. The country of Brazil is where the new network is connected to. The network begins at the Conhongas Airport in Brazil and leads into various cities in Brazil.

Looking at this from the GTA aerospace cluster’s perspective, these are the changes that are taking place:

“Effective immediately, GTA will begin offering twelve new flight options. The company is increasing the number of daily flights to Cuiba and Goiania, located in Western Brazil, through Congonhas and is also launching weekly flights to llheus in Bahia State.”

As you can see, there is an increased amount of travel towards the chosen cities in Brazil, with this implementation, the GTA aerospace now has access to popular tourist areas in Brazil and other attractions where they can provide a more frequent service for, The main reason for implementing this strategy is to provide the customers with more convenience and travel options, which in turn will increase the number of bookings and revenue generated by both sides.

To ensure that these flights continue to operate in a frequent and efficient manner, the GTA aerospace has changed most of its departure and arrival ties to better suit customers needs, Sure this adds some changes to the customer’s side, but these changes are reflected on the website well in advance so that the customer is not informed, for example an hour before the flight is scheduled to depart.

The company that is responsible for bringing this partnership to life is GOL Linhas Aereas Inteligentes S.A. What is this? It is the parent company of Brazilian airlines. In other words, the company that owns the airlines in Brazil. In collaboration, these two clusters offer their customers with a sleek new fleet of airlines that focus on different aspects of travel. Comfort, style and safety are just a few of its main focuses.

One of the major benefits is that these airlines require low maintenance and fuel, as well as, low training costs for employees.

Implementing such as partnership with a popular destination, in my opinion, is a very beneficial strategy for the GTA. Especially, the tactics chosen, such as the low cost airlines, is a very strategic maneuvre used to reel in customers and profits.

Canada’s Western Aerospace is Taking Off
April 2, 2008, 8:13 am

Hello everyone, thanks again for visiting the blog.

Even though, this specific cluster is not a chosen competitor of the GTA aerospace cluster in this project, there are several valuable features possessed by this cluster that the GTA aerospace cluster can mimic. This article discusses entire on why one should invest in the GTA western cluster and what makesi t so unique above all other aerospace clusters in Canada.

Some of you may wonder why and how Canada contains the fourth largest aerospace cluster in the the world. Well here is your answer:

Accounting for 14 per cent of Canada’s total $22 billion industry performance, they are a key reason why Canada’s aerospace industry is the fourth largest in the world, behind only the United States, Britain and France.

According to industry Canada, the western aerospace cluster is the sole reason, why Canada has the fourth place in terms of having one of the most successful aerospace industries in the world.

The article provides, 4 reasons why one should invest in the western aerospace cluster in Canada, these may well be the unique features that makes this aerospace stand out above other successful Canadian aerospace clusters such as the GTA and Montreal. These unique features are, having a highly skilled and productive work force, maintaining its cost competitiveness, having solid research and development structures, and most importantly having a climate in which to grow.

Other than the last feature, the GTA aerospace cluster can definitely take advantage of these strategies used by the western Canadian aerospace.

This is something extra that I thought would be interesting, knowing the reason for such success is important to pay attention to and learn from. Therefore, the western Canadian aerospace cluster is a definite asset to the aerospace industry in Canada.

Building a 20 year vision for the Canadian Aerospace – CAP
March 31, 2008, 9:29 pm
Filed under: 1, What's New in the Aerospace

Hey all, thanks for dropping by again,

CAP (Canadian Aerospace Partnership) has come to an agreement on a 20 year vision towards the national aerospace industry. Even though this is on a nation-wide basis, the strategies that are set out on this nation-wide approach benefit the GTA cluster in numerous ways.

Realizing the amount of potential present in the aerospace industry in Canada, these strategies were developed so that for the entire 20 year span, Canada will be emerging with its several unique clusters such as Montreal and GTA, in outstanding ways.

So you may think to yourself saying why are they doing this? What is the main focus?. As stated on the article, here is the main focus from word to word.

“Ontario is home to a diverse blend of strong aerospace companies, working in areas such as aircraft, engines, components, flight simulators and electronic systems,” said Ontario Economic Development Minister Joseph Cordiano. “By developing a national aerospace strategy, we will expand the opportunities available to our firms, and enjoy the economic benefits a vigorous aerospace sector provides.”

What Joseph illustrates makes sense; the diverse aerospace companies that exist in the aerospace industry are creating opportunities and jobs for the economy with each improvement. Implementing this strategy will capitalize on these opportunities and even creating more will ensure the long lived success of this cluster.

Where are the strategies coming from? well, CAP is receiving strategies from three main networks. These are three working groups. Technology Investment and Commercialization, Major Platforms Working Group and Public Procurement working group are the three groups that are aiding CAP with the necessary strategies.

This is great news for the GTA cluster and the Canadian Aerospace, with this; we can ensure that the development of the aerospace in Canada is being looked after very well.

Until next time, Take care.

Supermaterials for the Aerospace
March 31, 2008, 8:14 am
Filed under: What's New in the Aerospace

Hey All, Thanks for visiting again!

“Research centre to develop supermaterials for the aerospace industry”

Supermaterials?, you heard that right!. The Canadian government and some Universities are extremely serious about Canada’s position in the Aerospace world. So, where do they go from here? The government has joined with a University in order to create extremely resistant materials to meet the high demands of the Aerospace cluster.

“The Honourable Michael M Fortier, Minister of Public Works and Government Services, on behalf of the Honourable Jim Prentice, Minister of Industry and Minister responsible for National Research Council Canada (NRC), officially opened the McGill Aerospace Materials and Alloy Development Centre at the NRC Industrial Materials Institute in Boucherville, Quebec today.”

This is where it all takes place, at the McGill Aerospace Materials and Alloy Development Centre. And you guessed correctly, McGill is the University that is responsible for developing a collaborative joint venture with the NRC (National Research Council Canada) to start the movement towards supermaterials. Other than just manufacturing supermaterials, resources will be allocated towards research and development with respect to manufacturing procedures and surface treatements also.

In my opinion, this was a very smart move done by the NRC and McGill University, by creating such collaboration, the Canadian Aerospace is heightened with its unique features and developments. In this case, the uniqueness emerging from the development of new materials and manufacturing procedures. By partnering, these institutions are now able to use the research capabilities of the NRC and the educational background and databases that the University has access to, and not to mention the qualified personnel produced by the McGill University. The collaboration can also take advantage of the Cold Spray facilities and Electron Beam Physical Vapor Deposition with their unique competitive advantages.

As stated in the article, here is the main focus of this implementation,

“Our new centre provides a great opportunity for Canada to take the lead, internationally, in research into high-value materials for aerospace,” said Dr. Stephen Yue, McGill’s Principal Investigator and leader of the team of researchers that won the CFI grant. “Given the considerable industrial activity in aerospace in Quebec, this centre will become a hub to support the regional aerospace materials sector.” (NCR, 2008)

_________________________________________________________________________________________

And here is an insert from a different article about the same topic, describing the focus in a different stand point:

“One objective of this collaboration is to show the viability of this technology for industry,” says Dr. Moreau. “We’ve set up one of the best cold spray labs worldwide. Now that we have the equipment, we expect to attract a lot of interest from aerospace companies.” (NCR, 2008)

No matter how the focus is described, this facility is a great asset to the Aerospace on Canada. As of now, the centre is based in Quebec, benefiting the emerging Montreal Aerospace, adding the same facilities to the GTA Aerospace Cluster can not only strengthen the GTA, but also strengthen Canada’s Aerospace as a whole.

Denver Aerospace – One of the many reasons for its success
March 28, 2008, 9:17 pm

Welcome Back!

Today, I’m going to be discussing how the Colorado Aerospace cluster can act as sort of a mentoring cluster to the GTA Aerospace cluster. The Denver Colorado Cluster, being one of the most successful clusters in America, has several unique features that can benefit the GTA cluster.

The following article discusses one of those features, employing private jobs.

“Colorado has total private aerospace employment of 26,650 workers, an increase of 12.9 percent from 2006 to 2007, according to the report.”

With 26,650 workers, this specific aerospace is ranked 2nd largest when comparing the cluster with the several other American Aerospace clusters. By employing private workers, this allows the cluster to have well rounded and skilled employees that are attractive in the aerospace industry. Therefore, outsourcing companies and expansion seeking companies look towards clusters who possess these employees. The reason being, because these employees possess knowledge that is entirely focused on that specific cluster, therefore presenting the highest amount of potential towards other companies to take advantage of.

After attracting and aligning with another company, the cluster is able to build a network of highly skilled employees and nurture them towards the growth of that cluster.

“New projects and operations have been fueling the growth of the aerospace industry in Colorado. The United Launch Alliance, a joint venture between Lockheed Martin and Boeing rocket operations, started operations in December 2006 and now has about 1,600 employees here, according to the report. Lockheed Martin’s work on an $8.2 billion NASA contract for the Orion crew-exploration vehicle that it won last year also has given the industry a huge boost, with nearly 500 employees here. Another 600 Orion-related jobs could be added in Colorado by 2009, according to the report.”

Just as the above insert from the article describes the benefits on employing private jobs, the GTA aerospace cluster can take advantage of the same concept to fuel its growth.

In turn, doing this can allow the GTA cluster to grow, as well as attract other companies seeking expansion opportunities.
