Hey All,
You have to check this concept out! GKN, a leading designer and manufacturer of aircraft tools and cleaning procedures have just came up with the latest breakthrough.
“GKN Sees Clear Improvements with New Wheelabrator Air Blast Machine”
Inserted from the article, the big-bold title describes the invention, a Wheelaborator Air Blast machine. Some of you are probably wondering what in the world a Wheelaborator Air Blast Machine is.
Well here is a precise description from the article:
“The Wheelabrator machine has enabled us to lower costs by recycling the media, as dry blasting allows the used abrasive to be separated from the oxide particles. It also means the parts are ready for use when they come out and we don’t have to rinse off any abrasive. In particular, the nozzle design is also preferred by our operators as we can clean the varied and complex areas of the tooling easily.”
The model developed concentrates on efficiently cleaning out oxide through a unique way. To clean these complex tools the Wheelaborator Air Blast Machine is used so that no excessive cleaning is needed and the tool is cleaned thoroughly so that nothing else is left to be cleaned afterwards.
What the UK aerospace has been adopting before is that they have been purchasing separate cleaning tools to individually clear out the oxide from each tool. As we can imagine, this can be a costly measure. Now, since the Wheelaborator Air Blast Machine has been introduced, this unit can does the job of several 100 other units. Proves be cost efficient and productive.
As of now, this is only used in the UK to the best of my knowledge, implementing this in Canada, more specifically; the GTA can improve our Aerospace measures and procedures. By using this tool, a reduction in time, reduction in cost and a more productive work environment is inherited.

Hey everyone,
Thanks for dropping by again. I found an article that provides some new information regarding an emerging Aerospace cluster in Canada.
A new aerospace cluster is emerging in Montreal that focuses entirely on a strategy that is designed to cut costs.
“The NRC-AMTC will focus on the development, demonstration and implementation of low-cost manufacturing technologies for aerospace, especially those of interest to small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs).”
The above insert from the article states that the NRC-AMTC (Aerospace Manufacturing Technology Centre) will in fact adopt cost saving manufacturing measures to quickly bring up this cluster to be one of the major clusters in Canada. The types of technology used by adopting such a measure will benefit this cluster by easing the procedure of manufacturing products and elevating it up to the aircraft measuring standards.
As noted in the article, the established centre will have these structural characteristics and provide several benefits to the economy:
- 20,000 sq. foot facility located on the campus of the Université de Montréal
- Direct creation of 100 jobs: 50 NRC staff, 50 guest workers
- Investment of $46.5 million over five years: $21.5 million from NRC, $25 million from Canada Economic Development
Now, as we can see, with its location being near the University of Montreal, this is a definite positive towards research collaboration and networking. With the graduating students from the University of Montreal, the centre will be able to train and produce highly qualified personnel to take part in this economy and its development.
By creating more than 100 jobs in Montreal, the benefits to the economy will increase with every job created.
This cluster is still in its preliminary stages. Check back in a few years and this cluster will have grown, because the amount of potential that the economy and the cluster possess is unimaginable.

Hey All, Thanks for visiting!
Came across an article which I think is pretty interesting. Its regarding the Wings and Wheels Heritage Festival in Toronto. Although, this may not be a news flash for some of you, some are actually unaware of the inventions that are presented in this festival.
The most recent festival that was held, May 26th and 27th of 2007 celebrated the 70th anniversary of Trans-Canada Airlines. For the ones that are not familiar with this Airline, it’s now known in the industry as Air Canada.
To prove the amount of support that this event receives, large companies such as Bombardier, Vicking Aircraft LTD and Bison Transport are some of the sponsors that the event is supported by.
The event is a fundraiser for the Toronto Aerospace Museum, a huge part of the Aerospace cluster in the GTA. To create awareness of the interesting and informative content provided to the consumers during this event, Wings and Wheels showcase important pieces of machinery from the past. These ranging from vehicles to airplanes.

The event is held in the Downs view park and I encourage all to go visit it when it takes place. This event plays a major role in the GTA Aerospace Cluster and provides important historic souvenirs that should be noted by all.
Here is a picture from the event:

This entry is regarding the support structures that are a part of the GTA Aerospace cluster. Each cluster collaborates with different institutions and research firms to find innovative ways that a cluster can grow and improve. The Aerospace cluster in the GTA collaborates with several different institutions that have provided assistance or are currently providing assistance with development. These are categorized from large business to educational institutions.
Large Businesses and Educational Institutions include:
- University of Toronto’s Institute of Aerospace Studies – Collaboration with researchers
- Ryerson University’s Institute for Aerospace Design and Innovation (RIADI)
- McMaster University
- Carlton University
- Waterloo University
- University of Ottawa
- Institute for Aerospace Research Ottawa – Canada’s national laboratory for Aerospace testing
- Bombardier Aerospace
The Aerospace cluster has built up a strong education based network with these top universities to assist and carry out research projects relating to the cluster. With these research projects, new inventions, discoveries and understandings are aggregated each year to benefit the cluster.

Hello! and thank you for taking the time to stop by at my blog. This blog focuses on providing you with the latest facts and insights about the Aerospace cluster. More specifically, the Aerospace cluster in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
The Aerospace cluster in the GTA has been evolving for the past decade with numerous innovative product lines and fixtures towards the industry. The Aerospace cluster benefits the Canadian economy by being the 2nd largest employing industry in Canada, consisting of 65% of the total labour force in Ontario. There are product lines being introduced that range from aircraft engines to air conditioners. With the aerospace cluster’s evolution in the GTA, this cluster has a great level of future potential to succeed and benefit the Canadian economy using strategies that can be noted on a global basis (GreaterTorontoorg, 2008).
Throughout the upcoming 15-20 days, I will be posting entries that relate to several different popular areas discussed in the aerospace cluster in the GTA. These postings will be supported by key facts, my comments, visuals and even podcasts.
